Those instances when I did not get the error message with my BD-RE may be down to my Lite-On BD-ROM not being a good reader. It doesn't happen often, but I've seen it at least a dozen times. *Most* times I get the same error messages. I always rip with my BD-ROM, and switch to my BD-RE drive when there's a problem. I can't say with certainty that sometimes the disc itself wasn't at fault. Usually when there's a problem, it'll be something like "sync byte missing", "sync byte discontinuity", "clipping detected", or "audio overlap". I don't recall seeing 3 passes very often. Any further passes are fairly quick, as it's the audio only. When I say 3 passes, it goes like this: During the first pass, there's a warning about the audio and a notice that another pass will be necessary. And when I make an MKV for playing from hard drive to TV, I need AC3 because the TV's optical out will downconvert DTS to 2 channel PCM.

That way, many times a main movie backup will fit on a BDR without re-encoding. With maybe the possibility that BD-players won't play them anymore? I can remember having Sony or CBS audio-cd's so badly f*cked up that my cd-transport refused them to always re-encode to AC3 to save more space for the video. My guess is that Hollywood will continue to encrypt their BD's to newer standards every time again. They are often seen in the "throw away bins" at large consumer electronics stores for a couple of euros (here in the Netherlands). But, DFW enjoyed to have a bad reputation in the past for not authoring dvd's properly. Decrypting as folder structure didn't work. Strange thing to remember is I only managed to extract the main streams when I de-encrypted as ISO and mount it.

Don't remember the title, it was long ago. I had a blu-ray once from "DFW", Dutch Film Works. So, while many prefer to rip the entire disc first, I don't think that's strictly necessary. I usually extract main movie with Clown_BD and DVDFabPasskey running in the background, direct from disc, and it never fails.
